LSA the clear winner on Saturday
14th October, 2006
London South Africa RFC (LSA) put on a great show on Saturday at their homeground, Imber Court, with two good wins to reward their loyal supporters who missed the Currie Cup final to support their local club. First up, LSA Shield XV beat Bishops Stortford 28-5, with four tries and four conversions. The Shield XV backline showed that they have blistering pace, particularly Nick de Kock, but special mention also goes to newcomer Nigel Bain, who previously played American football and who is making a transition into rugby that shows much promise. Gerrard Vock shone once again at flyhalf, securing four conversions plus a try of his own. Luke Nelson did some great work at the base of the ruck, upfront Keiran Gaffney did yeoman’s work, while Daniel Miering impressed at flanker. Some fine breaks were also made in the midfield by Peter Howlett, carving up the much bigger opposition, and there were some great "attempted" tackles by new recruit Brendan Sullivan. Coach Dries van Rensburg was visibly pleased, “It was a good effort. Two weeks ago we lost to Richmond Saxons. But we’ve now had two big wins in a row. Its shows the commitment of the players. I am particularly impressed by the team spirit and camaraderie that is developing, and this holds us in good stead for the rest of the season.”
The LSA Surrey XV followed with a 31-13 win over Old Emanuel, that included five tries. The set pieces worked well, and the team looked every bit a professional outfit. Certainly the team has benefited from new players feeding in from the Shield XV, but skipper John Turner expressed the need for greater continuity in the team going forward. With more training and cohesion coach Bert Merritt expects them to forge into a side capable of putting many more points over their Surrey opposition sides. But with two clear wins and a strong club spirit developing, the crowds appeared to enjoy the atmosphere of the day, especially the catering by Nyama, which introduced all the honorary South African to the delights of the boerewors roll (or several).
