Spirited London South Africa clinch key victory against Blackheath by 16 – 13.
28th October 2006
With London South Africa’s (LSA) Surrey side having a bye this weekend, the Shield side took on Blackheath, the UK’s oldest rugby club and the leaders in the Canterbury Shield division three, at their Imber Court ground. Blackheath’s results (only one defeat in their last six) showed that they are clearly a well-drilled, professional side. By comparison, LSA’s Shield XV are still a relatively new team, launched at the end of last season to accommodate the growing number of players joining the club. With determination and strong team spirit, LSA were able to step up to the challenge offered by Blackheath, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The game started well with LSA scoring in the first 5 minutes to give them an early advantage. It didn’t last long as Blackheath came back with a tremendous forward drive, scoring two tries of their own, and winning a penalty. They kept the lead for most of the game. Strong defence kept LSA in the game as the team stood up well against the opposition’s relentless onslaught, making it an outstanding feature of LSA’s game. This set up the platform for the furious final plays of the game. Just when victory looked certain for Blackheath, LSA rallied scoring a try and winning a penalty, which put them ahead 16-13 by the time the final whistle blew.
Reflecting on the game afterwards, coach Dries van Rensburg gave special mention to the forward efforts of Jake Hoddinot for his excellent tackling and Daniel Meiring for his excellent display in defence. In the backs, Gary Johnson for both his dangerous attacking play and effective defence and Malcolm Mirfin, whom he cited as the most valuable all round player of the day warranted a special mention. But clearly all the players contributed greatly to the day’s victory with their strong team spirit and determination, leading a visibly pleased van Rensburg to comment that, “I am very proud to coach a team of such a high calibre”. Looking to the rest of the season, he went on, “we are a new team, and we are still a work in progress. But watch this space!”
Next week, both LSA sides play away: LSA Shield take on Rosslyn Park Development, while the LSA Surrey side will be playing London Exiles. All supporters are encouraged to attend to get behind both teams great start to the season. To find out more about LSA, please visit www.londonsouthafricarfc.co.uk.
